Summary/Abstract: The European Council adopted in Lisbon in March 2000 a European Union Development Strategy which outlines a new role in the world for the enlarged European Union in the 21st century. The EU has a new strategic objective: "to improve the quality of life of its citizens and the environment by 2010. The European Union must become the most competitive and dynamic knowledge economy in the world capable of sustainable economic growth, with more and more better jobs and better social integration".
