Wherefrom Have the Wallachians come (According to the Oral Tradition of the Population in the Regions of Vidin and Oryahovo)

Summary/Abstract: The paper presents the oral versions about the origin of the Wallachians, common among the Wallachians and Bulgarian population of the two regions studies. The first versions about the „double resettlement" across the Danube was different in details and is particularly popular in the region of Vidin. It is likewise accepted by the Bulgarians in the region. Intertwined in that version are sometimes criminal motifs, whereby instead of Wallachians, the people meant are Wallachian Gypsies. The second version „about the allegedly mixed origin of the population „is most widespread in the region of Oryahov-o, where the Wallachians settle at later date. A third version is sporadically encountered, according to which those lands were governed by the Romanians. Related to these ideas, the oral versions about the origin of the language have also been discussed, as well as about the origin of the language have also been discussed, as well as about the attitude of the Wallachians to the Romanians and to Romania. Without any historical comment on these oral versions, which play a role in the formation of the self-consciousness of the Wallachians, the conclusion has been drawn that the three versions are three different levels of the formation of a self-awareness of belonging to a group.
