Summary/Abstract: The Roman Republic and Carthage disputed the control of the western Mediterranean in three long and exhausting wars. During the Second Punic War, Carthaginian commander Hannibal invaded the Apennine peninsula and threatened the existence of the Roman Republic. This war attracted the attention of the entire ancient world. Philip V of Macedon decided to join the war on the side of Carthage. He sent envoys to Hannibal with a proposal for an alliance for joint action against Rome. Only a happy circumstance for the Romans failed those intentions and perhaps saved the Roman Republic from destruction.
