Summary/Abstract: Indebtedness was a problem Slovene peasants had been plagued with throughout the second half of the 19th and the first decades of this century. The author describes the issue in terms of two periods and uses 1890 as the cut-off year marking the end of an economic crisis. In the first period characterised by the crisis the debt was very large, but the second period was that of gradual recovery coupled with a drop in the burden or at least a bearable debt.
