Summary/Abstract: The collapse of communism in East-Central Europe still poses difficult questions of interpretation. What really happened in East-Central Europe during the "miraculous year" 1989? How can one characterize those events: revolutions, reforms, restorations, refolutions or rebirths? Furthermore, is violence an essential element of a revolution? If so, can one then characterize the 1989 events in East-Central Europe - with the notable exception of Romania - as revolutions? Furthermore, can one define the 1989 bloody events in Romania as a true revolution or just as a "revolution", that is, a disguised coup d'État?
