Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the problems faced by Polish museums (especially – ethnographic and regional). The author explores the question related to the organizational subordination of museums, as well as problems related to the acceptance of the principles of New Museol- ogy. She emphasizes the educational role (understood as inculcation of knowledge and the values) of the museum. Unfortunately, museums are often focused on such activities which give the opportunity to increase museum attendance. Besides, the paper is focused on the problem of the “participation in museums”. It is important to study the social environment in which the museum operates and let its representatives participate in the museum works and life. Generally, this participation ought to be a dialogue between the museum and visitors, who have their knowledge and needs. Unfortunately, museums often accept and get used to simple expectations. Finally, museums have become the element of popular culture. The next problem, that has been raised by the author is the cooperation between Polish museums and local scientific associations.
