Summary/Abstract: The Slynx by Tatyana Tolstaya and The Gost Station by Anna Kalinkina are drawn near by the subject of the world (the old-time Moscow) after a nuclear cataclysm. Both authors used a motif of graffiti quotes appearing as a trace of human activity before the cataclysm as well as a result of activity of the inhabitants of the postatomic world. The aim of this article is to compare the functions of graffiti motifs in both novels. Conclusions drawn from the analysis indicate that in The Slynx, the informal inscriptions are the evidence of intellectual degradation of the inhabitants of past Moscow, in The Ghost Station, however, graffiti quotes are the testimony of reflectiveness of the main characters which gives hope for humankind progress, even in the post-apocalyptic world.
