Summary/Abstract: James Gleeson was one of Australia’s most prominent painters, and its main proponent of surrealism. He lived from 1915 to 2008, and his work reflected major events, along with artistic and intellectual influences, in the twentieth century. As a young man he visited Europe and was influenced by psychoanalysis, surrealism and Dali, and modernism in writing and visual arts generally. He collected an impressive array of first editions of modern writers, including Eliot and Pound, and at a very senior age could recite large sections of the work of Auden and Eliot by heart.
