Summary/Abstract: Italians have long considered their eastern border the most sensitive part of their unified country founded in the middle of the Nineteenth century. This border inspired aspirations, anxietes and also political values, which marked Italian politics, both at the international and domestic levels. In an essay, the author explores different meanings that were attached to the eastern border under changing historical circumstances, from the time of Risorgimento to the disintegration of Yugoslavia.
