Summary/Abstract: This paper focuses on the multiple ways, which the languages over the world use to express formally the grammatical category number. The contrastive analysis of the category´s realizations in nine typologically diferent, areally distant and unrelated languages shows clearly that the number is not a universal category. In spite of its optativeness and heterogeneity, the contensive typological study offers a possible explanation of the nature and origin of the category: the number can be understood better as the result of the blending of the mental category quantity of the objects and persons and the semantic feature animacy.
