TEXTILE AS AN ARTISTIC EXPRESSION

Summary/Abstract: Textile which was one of the oldest activity of human history, is a surface that comes into existence by using different techniques. Textile, is one of the basic materials used on the body and in places. We can see textiles with their visual qualities in aesthetical objects, or in design and art with their constructional qualities. The living conditions brought by the twentieth century have created a new and interdisciplinary conceptual understanding of art with different forms of expression. Artistic expressions developed through new approaches also influenced textile art. In this process, on the one hand, tapestry related activities continued in various parts of the world, and on the other hand, textile weaving and different techniques started to produce three dimensional works, various surfaces and a new field of interdisciplinary art emerged as textile art or fiber art or artistic textiles. In this study, the process of transformation of textile into art object and the formal change of this art are examined by giving examples from the original works of the artists.
