THE ROLE OF MUSIC IN VLADIMIR LENIN’S CULT LEADERSHIP CONSTRUCTION: THE SONG “AND THE WAR BEGINS”

Summary/Abstract: Vladimir Lenin, the founder of the Soviet Union, was adopted as a cult leader by the Soviet propaganda until the unity broke out in 1991. In this process, Soviet propaganda used music as an important propaganda tool. Especially in 1974, the And The War Begins (И вновь продолжается бой), a song belonging to Nikolay Dobronravov and his wife, Aleksandra Pahmutova, who was also composed, played an important role in the construction of Lenin’s cult leadership. In the study, it was tried to reveal how Soviet propaganda tried to construct Lenin as a cult leader in the eyes of the Soviet people. Within the scope of the study, the music analysis method and semiotic analysis method among the qualitative research methods were used for the propaganda song “And The War Begins”. According to the findings, it was revealed that Lenin’s thoughts were constantly formed in the Soviet people, and that the Soviet people were fiercely loyal to the October Revolution and their leader, Lenin. It was observed that the song analyzed with aural-oral method was in the form of a two-part song, in the minor do tone, in the 4/4 rhythmic structure and was used during the execution of the percussion and copper-blown instruments with choir.
