Summary/Abstract: The author focuses on the term "military doctrine", its classification and the contradiction between military science and military doctrine. These issues are illustrated by the analysis of the examples of the actual states' armed forces doctrines in the 20th century, and objective and subjective factors, influencing the forming of these doctrines, are indicated. The article discusses the influence of the internal political and security situation within states or coalitions, the geostrategic position, external military threats, the strategic balance of forces and the military technology development with the emphasis on weapons systems. The article also presents the possible ways of how the coalition and national military doctrines might develop in the time of globalisation, with the emphasis on the changes stemming from "Operations Other Than War" and the so-called "fight against terrorism",
