The First Years of Economic Transition in Slovenia

Summary/Abstract: The following article focuses on the beginnings of the economic transition in Slovenia, characterised by the change from a closed and planned central economy into an open social market economy. The author defines the term "transition " and presents the crisis in the 1980s which led to it. He focuses on the formai beginning of the transition and the path towards economic independence. The three central processes of the economic transition are underlined: macroeconomic stabilisation, privatisation and restructuring. Economic transition represents an important part of the development of the young Slovenian state and by all means deserves an in-depth historical research.
