Summary/Abstract: The aim of this research is to determine the teaching methods and approaches used in the Turkish religious music course in the faculties of theology in detail based on the views of students. The population of the study consists of students studying at faculties of theology, who take Turkish religious music course. The sample group is comprised of 2nd year students studying at Tekirdag Namık Kemal University, Faculty of Theology. For this purpose, survey method was used by implementing total population sampling technique. The survey was conducted among 81 Tekirdag Namık Kemal University, Faculty of Theology students. To evaluate the data obtained from the survey, descriptive statistics and nonparametric tests were used. According to the findings of the research obtained from the views of the students, it was observed that in Turkish religious music courses taught at faculties of theology, along with maqam, usûl and form practices; a lot of listening and repetition methods and approaches which constitute the basis of meşk system were also tried to be used. However, some statistically significant differences were detected according to gender variable in terms of recognizing musical instruments used in Turkish religious music, taking part in Sufi music choirs and spending more time to practice. Also, there are significant differences among students according to the high school graduation variable in terms of making use of lecture notes, sound recordings and videos; doing a lot of repetitions and breathing exercises on works; maqam, pitch accuracy, form and usûl practices and studies relating to the period and composer. As a result of the study, the findings were analyzed and discussed. Some solutions were offered to improve the current methods and approaches used in Turkish religious music course in order to make it more effective.
