Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to present the concept of sociology of the social crisis inspired by Maria Jarosz’s works. The elements of the institutional theory, systems theory, sociology of social problems, identity and conflict, which are presented in this article, served to study the symptoms of crisis (social inequalities, exclusion, social and institutional pathologies). The concept of sociology of the social crisis is based on the study of a divided society, affected by dysfunctions in the sphere of social life and in the institutional dimension. Intentional fuelling of social conflicts is a manipulation to maintain power. ‘Engaged sociology’, i.e. the one that studies social relations through a researcher’s personal involvement in the phenomena described, is used to study the social crisis. Identifying the sources of crisis fulfils the postulate of the usefulness of sociological research.
