Summary/Abstract: Bohinj is among the areas with the best preserved cultural heritage of the building environment. This is the result of the needs of people living in the rural areas. They tried to use sustainable resources as much as possible. Among different buildings, which helped people to survive in this humble country are hay barns (in dialect "svisli"). Their purpose was to save the hay. Farmers prepared dry hay during the summer and saved it in the hay barns, which were erected on alpine meadows. In winter time they transported the hay to the settlements in the valley. This hay was important food for domestic animals during long and cold winters. Hay barns are auxiliary buildings. The stay far from farmhouses and villages. The most important thing about hay barns is their usefulness. These buildings in Bohinj show a very high level of carpenter knowledge and the use of local material - wood. The aesthetics is only the consequence of the rationality. Nevertheless these buildings were an indispensable part of the picturesque cultural landscape in the Alps. A higher standard of living and the change in agriculture in the past decades have resulted in the abandonment of the meadows. The forest has spread to the former alpine meadows, and the consequence is the collapse of this wooden buildings. I want to show the basic composition principles of the hay barns over the Uskovnica pasture in Bohinj because these buildings unfortunately deteriorate every year.
