Summary/Abstract: The main purpose of this article is to assess the progress of cooperation and integration in the security and economy of the South African Development Community, or SADC. At the same time, it analyses the reasons for and obstacles to integration. To do this, the region is first put into the global post-cold war context of integration, known as New Regionalism. The main economic and security characteristics of the region are then described, distinguishing between the traditional and human security approaches. In conclusion, I advise more realistic, less demanding expectations of regionalisation in the SADC, due to the relative infancy of integration efforts in southern Africa and the weak structures of regional states. At the same time, the growing convergence in perceptions of problems and threats amongst official representatives is highlighted as a sign of positive development in the community.
