Summary/Abstract: A common mistake in the treatment of introspection and reflection as methods of studying consciousness is treating them as interchangeable, due to the vagueness of the concepts themselves. After defining them, I undertake a detailed description of reflection’s peculiarities, using one of its most developed forms – the phenomenological reflection. I expose its main features and try to answer the epistemological and ontological skepticism it evokes, drawing from contemporary cognitive science. Next I tackle the question whether phenomenology and science are incompatible and provide an argument for their compatibility under certain conditions. I conclude that introspection is an inquiry into inner experience with an unarmed eye, while reflection builds thinking instruments that make that inquiry more exact, deeper, and more effective.
