Summary/Abstract: The author studies the cultural influence of Hellenistic papyri on the New Testament within the centuries 1 to 3 A.D. in his remarkable PhD thesis on the topic mentioned in the title, which was published in 1942 with the title a hellenistikus papyrusok, feliratok, ostrakák világa és az Újtestamentum [The world of Hellenistic papyri, epigraphs and ostraca and the New Testament]. Both the original Protestant interpretational world of thought and the modern Protestant theological attitude can be detected well in the approach of Zsigmond Varga, Jr.The described issues on the location of the Septuagint, the role of infidelity, from the Christian virtues the work as the appreciation of the vocation granted by God or the summary of the „point” of Christianity, the professed ideas about the two sacraments, baptism and the Holy Communion, and about the prayer, and the thoughts on raising the „sacred Christian way of life” in the place of tradition all refer to Protestant roots. Placing the role of sources in the centre, the emphasis on the influence of the Hellenistic world on Christianity, the presentation of Christ’s activity here below and of Paul’s letters, emphasizing their original context of space and time all refer to the adoption of modern theological hermeneutics. However, the mentioned interpretation of Zsigmond Varga, Jr. sensibly expresses the temperament of the young Presbyterian minister and preacher.
