The Contribution of the Urban Intelligentsia to the Preservation of the Architectural Heritage of Rybinsk in the 1960—1980s

Summary/Abstract: The Russian social organization for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments (VOOPIK) was founded in 1965. It was the first organization which had a public status and was engaged in preserving, restoring, popularizing the preservation of historical and cultural monuments. The chronological scope of the research covers the period 1960—1980s. It was time of beginning of the active movement for defense of monuments of history and culture. The work is based on published and unpublished sources. Studies on this subject stresses state management of monuments of history and culture, in the context of this article, the work of intelligentsia in the field of preserving historical and cultural monuments is considered. The article deals with the activities of members of the Rybinsk branch of the Russian social organization for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments (VOOPIK) for the preservation, promotion and restoration of historical and cultural monuments. On the example of the Rybinsk city department of VOOPIK the article shows the work of the intelligentsia of preserving the town’s image, describes the methods of work, draws conclusions about the contribution of individual members of organization to the preservation and popularization of the history and culture of Rybinsk. The study raises issues of interaction between the authorities and the public on the issues of preserving and changing the nature of use, popularization of heritage sites. As the studied material shows, the local intelligentsia had a great influence on the preservation of the monuments of the city. In general, the methods of work of members of the organization were successful, in particular the publications of activists of the organization promoted popularization among the population of knowledge about the native land and objects of cultural heritage located there. The experience of the activists of the Rybinsk department shows that during the time of their active work the VOOPIK has done much to preserve the historical appearance of the town of Rybinsk.
