Summary/Abstract: Cultural interactions that have become more and more intense and frequent in the present-day world as well as the rise of postcolonial awareness enable cultures and societies to move beyond previous cultural dogmas and stereotypes of alleged allegedly “inborn“ supremacy of Western culture and embrace a larger variety of cultural traditions and practices. The cultural legacy of Islamic garden and its highly developed aesthetics of water has become an object of popular interest as well as the growing target of academic research. This article is an inquiry into the issue asthetic features of Islamic gardens and their relation to symbolism as well as into their variety viewed from a comparative perspective. Basing his insights on the field studies of Islamic gardens found in such different localities as Iran, Indonesia and Spain (Andalusia), the author of this article re-examines the legacy of Islamic garden as well as academic sources available in the field suggesting that this rich cultural legacy can be used in various cultures and localities, including Lithuania.
