Summary/Abstract: During the last four decades, studies regarding verbal politeness have earned a relevant place within the linguistic research community, thanks to their contribution to the theoretical and methodological exploration of the speech and conversational analysis, as well as their constant connection with other disciplines, such as sociolinguistics, social pragmatism and ethnography of communication, among others. Classic and former studies on the subject of politeness are traditionally focused in underlining most notably the social and merely formal values found on verbal politeness, thus overshadowing the individual, creative and strategic characteristics arousing from it; under the light of this ordinarily discarded prism, the author embarks on a sociolinguistic analysis on the characteristics of verbal politeness in interpersonal relations taking place in the speech community of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, the first Spanish-speaking linguistic community in The Americas (“New World” as understood when the American continent was discovered in 1492), using a data collection scheme based in total-spontaneity and/or partialspontaneity of the participants involved.
