Summary/Abstract: The paper analyzes the frequency and syntactic context of modal verbs with deontic meaning in the language of the legislation on the basis of the corpus made by the analysis of The Labour Law of Montenegro. It provides a theoretical overview concerning the categories and types of modality and modal meanings, as well as the characteristics of legal language, the structure of the law and description of legal norms, followed by the analysis of the corpus. The corpus consists of 181 example of the use of modal verbs can and must, and modal expressionbe obliged to. The examples are analyzed in terms of syntax and semantics, followed by description of the most common syntactic structures with the above mentioned modal verbs, including their meaning in the context. The paper also provides the percentage and numerical overview of the share of modals in the corpus.
