Summary/Abstract: This paper analyzes the use of linguistic signals in the academic articles of university teachers of English, Serbian and Frenchwhen they write in their mother tongue. Based on the theoretical postulates of Hinds’ (1987) implicit typology (according to the writer's responsibility - reader's responsibility parameter), the study seeks to answer the question: which group of authors shows the highest level of responsibility towards their readers. First of all, the paper presents the theoretical background of the new language typology and the use of linguistic signals in academic texts. After describing the methodology, the second part of the paper presents the results of the conducted research, based on an electronic corpus consisting of 45 academics articles in the field of philology. The data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively (SPSS, version 20.00) – the statistical analysis first involved descriptive statistics which showed the total number of linguistic signals in the text, depending on the group of authors and the part of academic text (introduction, body, conclusion); after this, a chi-square test and a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to investigate the statistical significance of the relation between the use of linguistic signals and the group of authors.
