Summary/Abstract: In this article, the novels And Never Said a Word and House without Guardians and the narrative The Bread of Those Early Years by Heinrich Böll are analyzed according to the aspects of social reality and social justice. The emphasis here is less on the fact that in his 1950s novels Böll made social phenomena of social reality and social justice into important topics, but more on how he presented them: on the one hand, both authentic and convincing as well as highly critical, and, on the other, simultaneously “realistic” and materialistic but also Christian-symbolic.
