Summary/Abstract: The main focus of this article is pictures and how they can help us to speak on current political themes in civilization and culture. This will be demonstrated with topics such as “the migration debate” and “the refugee crisis” in Austria and Germany. The centre of this interest is the concept of how we can use pictures as a “stimulus” to interact with learners. Pictures intentionally or unintentionally fulfil a lot of different functions: They represent power, propagate opinions, or illustrate facts. In language courses, they can be used to introduce a new subject or to delve into topics by animating the learners to be creative and to think about its specifics. Pictures are able to polarise in their meaning. They can change a student’s perspective on a subject and support critical thinking by letting the learners realize the important aspects of the picture.
