Summary/Abstract: The lexical corpus from areas where speeches of the Eastern Herzegovinian dialect are distributed (the regions of Herzegovina and Krajina) has a prominent place in The Dictionary of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (and its card-index cabinets). No fewer than 80 lexical unit collections have been gathered over the past century from the region of Krajina (western parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina along and across the border of Croatia inhabited mainly by the Serbs), the collections ranging from comprehensive to minor ones. The cardindex cabinets of The Dictionary contain the lexis from all regions, especially from those of Eastern Herzegovina, Dubrovnik and Banija. Among these collections, the one gathered by Prof. Vladan Arsenijevic of the Serbian Teachers’ College from the town of Karlovac, Croatia, stands out in terms of its volume (260,000 units). Along with The Serbian Dictionary by Vuk Stefanovic Karadzic, it crucially defines the contents and lexicographical guidelines for The Dictionary. This lexis is largely complemented by the lexis gathered from other sources, ethnographic and literary in particular. Viewed in the entirety of its contents and volume, the western Serbian speeches collections (along with other sources that offer provincial lexis from these areas) make it possible for the western wing of štokavian speeches to be on equal terms with other speeches of the same dialect, that is, with other sources for The Dictionary. The latest lexis from these areas contained in printed media, if added to the existing corpus of The Dictionary, would only enlarge the lexical fund of the Serbian language.
