Summary/Abstract: The formal documents that regulate learning and teaching, as well as the Exam Formats for the examinations in 7th and 12th grade use the term “literary competence”. The analysis of the documents – including the Bulgarian National Standards for Language and Literary Education, Literature Curriculums and Exam Programs – reveal that the “literary competence” has not yet been conceptualised adequately. The aim of this article is to propose a conceptualisation of literary competence based on a flexible, holistic model of competence presented by the author
