Summary/Abstract: The object of this study is Pencho Slavejkov’s poem “Tsar Samuil”. The poem has been analyzed in the context of the book “Epic Songs” and the modernist aesthetics of the author. The ideological identity of the theme of suffering has been the special focus of the study. A parallel has been drawn between Slavejkov’s poetic representation of the medieval ruler on the one hand, and his evaluation by historiography on the other. The article defends the idea that Pencho Slaveikov’s image of the great and tragic tsar corresponds to the central idea of him in the history of Bulgarian culture.
