Summary/Abstract: Recently the interest of the Hungarian Reformed Church in Transylvania has turned towards the historical documents preserved in the archives of the former Romanian Secret Police (Securitate) of the Communist era before 1989. Many pastors of the Church have encountered some of their own files. The present study, by historical survey, has the purpose to provide additional data to improve their orientation among the slack-structured database of the secret police files. The main duty of the Securitate has always been to protect the Communist Party and regime in power. This was done by persecutions, imprisoning and often by annihilation. During the same period of time there were many political debates, struggles and sometimes harsh battles within the Communist Party among the chief leaders to obtain power over the Securitate in order to secure and strengthen their control over both the Party and the country. This structure apparently collapsed totally after the changes in 1989,nevertheless there are eloquent signs that the Securitate has survived in various forms.
