Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the paper is to show the relationship between similar semantic categories of degree and grade. They are identical in case of comparison or relation towards a norm, but they differ at the levels of expressivity and subjectivity. So, in the sphere of denotative semantics there is no difference whatsoever; it only appears in the sphere of subjective interpretation (subjective assessment) and expressivity, which is an almost compulsory component in case of the grade. The paper aims at separating the two categories, although they intertwine to a great extent, especially on their respective peripheries, which is proven in the paper. The onomasiological method is used, along with the functional grammar one and the functional-semantic field theory. This approach to the categories in question allows for new interpretations of linguistic phenomena via special meta-language, which might contribute to a better understanding of human linguistic, cognitive and psychological abilities.
