Summary/Abstract: Studies on the press aimed at rural populations from the 19th century until WorldWar I aim to determine and describe changes in publishing and the reading markets, fromthe establishment of the first journals up until the socio-political transformation. Thepopular press during the Russian Partition is discussed, whose first goal was to cut illiteracyin rural areas. Comparison of particular titles with regard to their content, addressees andeditorial teams facilitated the determination of the functions of the popular press duringthe period and region defined. The activity of the press for the rural population in the perioddefined above varied. The journals were dominated by educational, social and religiouscontent. The struggle to preserve Polishness during the three partitions, although differentdue to state administration circumstances, focused on the popularisation of knowledgeof Polish history and on learning the native language.
