Encounters and Misunderstandings

Summary/Abstract: Critic Tímea Papp writes about three performances seen at the showcase of the Csiky Gergely Hungarian National Theatre in Timișoara. The reviewer thinks that Hedda Gabler (dir.: Tom Dugdale), The Commune (Kommuna) (dir.: Radu-Alexandru Nica) and A Tiny Cosmic Misunderstanding (dir.: Anna Csábi) have in common the female perspective in the investigation of desires, goals and decisional opportunities. Papp, however is not satisfied with these present interpretations of Ibsen’s and Thomas Vinterberg’s creations: their actuality is mainly superficial, restricted to the level of technical appearancesor the contemporaneity signalled in costumes, allowing less space for the deeper analysis of the problems suggested by the dramatic material and through this for more elaborate interpretations of the characters. The performance directed by Anna Csábi is an exception. The surreal playfulness, floating character and magical reality of the performance based on András Forgách’s short stories rewritten into female monologues make the women’s musical parts real and lifelike.
