Summary/Abstract: The article presents a little-known and unused source of information in regards to World War I – the unpublished personal diary of Mihail Madjarov, covering the period October 1915 – May 1916. In it, page after page, the complex and multi-layered picture of the atmosphere and moods in Bulgaria during the initial period of the country’s participation in the war is recreated. A gifted writer, sharp and critical observer, Madjarov offers a different view on events and personalities, on the possible choices or the lack of such, on the Bulgarian people’s psychology. By alternating the quotidian narrative with reasoning and assessment, he achieves a remarkable pattern of time without any pathetics, and at the same time outlines the current and topical problems of discouragement, depopulation, alienation.
