Summary/Abstract: The author analyse the problem of the protection of life of the man living in the city. He focuses on these elements of the environment, which improve the quality of human life and particularly refers to the teaching of Pope Francis explained in the encyclical Laudato si’. According to the pope not only material, but mainly spiritual well-being has a great impact on quality of life. The author of the article making comments on the encyclical discusses chosen elements of human environment which influence the quality of human life: clean air, light, natural environment, an open and wide space, a private sphere, religious and social environment. Further, he presents some contemporary threats to quality of life, especially in cities: air pollution, urban chaos, ugliness, densely populated residential areas, restricted access to green spaces, unfavourable conditions for bringing up the young generation, improper interpersonal relationships causing social fatigue. Both people who design housing estates and shape social policy ought to be guided by good of each human and city dweller more efficiently. This is also an educational task for organizations dealing with ecology and nature conservation and for the Catholic Church. On the one hand, the main point is to oppose „culture of consumption”, egoism, preferring material gain. On the other hand, to shape a need of contact with nature being God’s gift, aesthetic sensitivity and responsibility for the environment.
