Summary/Abstract: This essay will analyse ethnic politics and the breakup of Yugoslavia. It will consider what the key explanatory factors were for the rise in ethnic politics. There will also be an analysis as to why nationalist politics, virtually unseen during communism, ended in such brutal warfare. Whilst the focus will be on the former Yugoslavia, there will be a comparison with the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, a case which did not end in violence.
