Summary/Abstract: The great wave of student protests in March 1968 also swept up the young academic centre in Opole. The culminating act of the protest was a sit-in in the city’s Institute of Education on 18 March 1968. In the wake of this, there were a range of repressive actions, on top of which there were antisemitic purges. The repression impacted upon a similar number of young people both attending school and those in work, who showed solidarity with the students’ act of protest. In the context of the specific ethnic make-up of the region, particular attention should be paid to the fact that among those supporting the students there were also young people from Silesian families. Given the displays of support for the students in other social contexts, the events of that time can be treated as a kind of foretaste of the phenomenon of “Solidarity”. On the other hand, the campaign of repression undertaken at that time led to the rejuvenation of the local apparatus of the state and the creation of new, and enduring personal relationships.
