Summary/Abstract: After World War II the Polish administration in Olsztyn was built up from zero in various areas, one of which was education. During the transition period the authorities managed to organise schooling according to the prewar system operating in Poland from 1932. In Olsztyn, apart from the private Polish-medium Catholic primary school which operated during the years 1934–1939, there was no tradition of Polish education at secondary or vocational level. There was an absence of didactic support, there were no pedagogic staff or educational authority. All that existed was a local basic German structure of schools, to varying degrees destroyed. Nevertheless, in such specific conditions it was possible to initiate – the quickest in history, because it took a mere two months – the 1944/1945 school year and to establish, within the framework of the general secondary school, the first state boys middle school in Olsztyn, together with two primary schools of different levels of completeness. In the following years not only did the number of schools in Olsztyn increase, but also did their organisational level.
