Summary/Abstract: When calculating the consumer price index for goods and services Central Of-fice of Statistics uses a model of household consumption from the preceding year as a sys-tem of weights. In this way a classic Laspeyres index formula is created. Consumers can, however, keep their structure of the consumption updated on the basis of changing prices and, reasonably, replacing more expensive goods with cheaper ones may actually lower the cost of living in relation to the published CPI. This effect is described, inter alia, by the equality of Bortkiewicz. The aim of the article is to analyse the impact of consumption up-dating on the CPI in Poland.
