Summary/Abstract: In his book Les élections présidentielles en France. 1958–2012, professor Michel Winock not only presents the specificity of the elections of the French head of state, but also of the office. The discussion begins with explaining the historical conditions related to the position of the President of the Republic. Further, the establishment of the Fifth Republic of France is presented, as well as the new creation in the science of political systems – the semi-presidential system – which is mostly the result of General Charles de Gaulle’s activity. Subsequent chapters contain characteristics of exercising the office by its individual holders and the extent to which political marketing decides on the outcome of electoral competition in the modern world.
