Summary/Abstract: This paper discusses the standardization in language as it is dealt with in orthography textbooks published in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro after these states decided to give up their common orthographic norm. The four orthography textbooks (Pravopis bosanskoga jezika, Hrvatski pravopis, Pravopis srpskoga jezika, and Pravopis crnogorskog jezika) have been compared with reference to the attitude towards common legacy, alphabet, and pronunciation (specific features of the jekavian dialect), relationship between etymological and phonetic spelling rules, dual solutions, attitude towards borrowings, terminology, etc.
