Summary/Abstract: In this article I intend to uncover what lies behind the rhetoric of objectivity that surrounds some of the most elementary components of today’s virtual environment, algorithms and Big Data. In this process I will highlight the effects on user behavior of what, in Gillespie’s words, has become the ‘ideology of mechanical objectivity’. I will use Foucault’s concept of governmentality in order to show the organized practices – resulting from the information and communications technology –, through which subjects are governed. In the end I will point towards a possible ‘focus of resistance’, the development of a knowledge ethics.
