Summary/Abstract: "The message of Laurence Sterne’s "A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy" (1768) goes far beyond the mere account of a physical journey written in response to the eighteenth-century vogue for travel narratives. Sterne’s journey is aimed at creating a new literary text: a liberated text which could give shelter to those social images, artistic beliefs, and patterns of human behaviour whose literary representation had been excluded from the ‘official’ canon.
