Summary/Abstract: The 20th century russian composer, Igor Stravinsky, an orthodox practicant, wrote a work based on three Psalms from the Bible, with an open note: “Cette Symphonie composee la gloire de Dieu…”. The Symphony of Psalms was written at the command of Serghei Koussevitzky in order to celebrate 50 years since the founding of the Symphonic Orchestra from Boston. The connection between religion and this vocal-symphonic work are the influences from the Gregorian and the Byzantine melody. As a practicant of religion, Stravinsky was influenced by the sacred music and included it in another orchestral works during his life. Considering that The Symphony of Psalms belongs to the Stravinsky’s neoclassical composition period (in the years when he lived in the United States of America), in which the composer returns to the old substrate of the music, this work differs from the ones composed during the russian period because here we can find the old scales of the gregorian music and his feelings for religious music.
