Translator's Argumentum: Sava Babić's Theory of Translation

Summary/Abstract: Sava Babić, a prominent translator from the Hungarian language, occupies a significant position in the history of Serbian translation theory in the second half of the 20th century. His books on translation are all conceived differently, in terms of genre, from a scholarly monograph, to the books of essays, to the fragmentary notes on prose or poetic works he translated. His thought on translation is dispersive, covering plenty of themes and problems. Babić's research in his early works was based on the translation poetics of Henri Meschonnic, the reception theory of Hans Robert Jauss and on the ideas of his predecessors, Bogdan Popović and Isidora Sekulić on Serbian translation. Babić’s approach is consistently descriptive, based on the translation practice description and focused on the target text and context. He is particularly interested in the aspects of cultural transfer through translation, translation criticism and translator’s conception. The paper presents an overview of Babić’s theoretical concepts and creative insights in the context of his efforts to make the translation process more understandable and interesting to an ordinary reader and not just to an expert.
