Summary/Abstract: This article discusses the research carried out by one of the most conspicuous representatives of the demographic research in our countrry, a statistician and teacher in economics and demography at the Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridsky" during the 30s and 40s of this century. His university publication "Basic course in demography" is considered till today the fullest and most systematised edition in demography. He discusses various subjects and methods of demography and its links as a science of a theoretical type to other social sciences and statistics. He is critical towards the most famous demographic theories as exhibited in the demograhic literature and was the first in Bulgaria to define problems and tasks of a population policy. He investigated the population change during 1880-1940 by using data from the population censuses that were carried in our country, and made a comparative analysis of fertility, mortality, and nuptiality by considering other European countries. His findings are that the development of the demographic statistics in our country is at a very high level and that the elaborated indicators reflect correctly the demographic processes. They follow the model of European countries but keep a number of traditional features of the Bulgarian population — high fertility low divorcity and low natality, that could be explained better with the value orientation to children in the family rather than by economic factors.
