Summary/Abstract: This paper describes an academic course newly introduced in the PhD programme in philology at the Faculty of Philosophy of Niš, Serbia. The course, titled Contrastive research in academic discourse, deals with intercultural academic rhetoric and aims to provide PhD candidates with a better understanding of differences in academic writing created by authors of different cultural background. The first part of the paper offers a theoretical background defining several concepts, such as a modern understanding of rhetoric, intercultural rhetoric, academic rhetoric and the research article. Modern rhetoric is defined as the study which examines all modes of successful com­munication, while intercultural academic rhetoric is concerned with the rhetorical means used by academic writers of different writing cultures. Also, the research article is explained as a carrier of cultur­ally-based differences, and as the most frequently examined academic genre. The second part of the paper describes the abovementioned academic course by explaining its content in detail, and by presenting a list of research topics proposed for students’ independent research within academic discourse contrastive studies. The students are also informed about the methods and techniques suitable for this type of contrastive research. Finally, the paper offers a short summary composed on the basis of students’ evaluation of the attended course, serving as an important feedback to the teacher of the course.
