Summary/Abstract: In this essay we are analyzing, on the basis of four artistically relevant performances, the different approaches which have been developing in the contemporary European theater directing (since the 80’s) towards Aeschylus’ The Oresteia and especially its last and the most importantpart. Although they belong to the different theoretical models – from actualization to deconstruction – all these performances present a challenge, on the basis of the contemporary experience, to the optimistic political and religious ideas of Aeschylus. This challenge ranges from adirect political statement that the justice achieved at theend of The Oresteia was false (in Mira Erceg’s production) to the anthropological pessimism of Michael Thalheimer and the approval of political pragmatism in the performance of Johan Simons.
