Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the unique find of a miniature axe from Horky nad Jizerou (Central Bohemia). After a brief summary of the find circumstances (detector find without context), a detailed description of the axe, its type classification, provenance, dating and socio-economic interpretation in the context of early medieval Bohemia follows. The find is classified among the miniature axes of East European origin (so-called Staro Rus or Old Russian) and placed between the 2nd half of the 11th century and the beginning of the 13th century. The occurrence of the miniature axe in the Bohemian River Jizera Basin is interpreted as a reflection of the heterogeneous composition and mobility of the military retinues in early medieval Bohemia, or it may be related to the course of the long-distance routes connect- ing Bohemia via Lusatia and Silesia to Eastern and Northeast Europe. Lengthy passages summarize the current find fund and the typal spectrum of miniature axes in Eastern, Northern and Central Europe, discussing their functions, social significance and social and geographic transfer. Other archaeological evidence of the contacts of Bohemia with Eastern Europe in the Early Middle Ages are also discussed.
